NOMAD STORIES | An Interview with Yves

NOMAD STORIES | An Interview with Yves

At FUTRWORKS. We’re constantly inspired by the stories of digital nomads who pass through our doors. Recently, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Yves, a freelance programmer who’s been traveling the world for 18 months. On his second visit to Osaka, Yves shared his experiences as a digital nomad and why the city—and FUTRWORKS —has become a special part of his journey.

Why did you come back to Osaka?
“In my opinion, Osaka is the Mecca of Japan. People here are so nice, the food offers incredible variety, and the city is always alive with something happening. You can find whatever you want and have an amazing time.
But the community here is what really brought me back. I was here six months ago during FUTRFEST, your pre-launch campaign for FUTRWORKS. I met so many awesome people—travelers, locals, entrepreneurs—and it was such a positive experience. I just felt like I needed to come back and relive it all over again.”

What do you think Osaka can offer digital nomads and entrepreneurs?
“Osaka is perfect for digital nomads and entrepreneurs because it’s so diverse. There’s a variety of people to meet and places to explore. You can connect with businesses, meet other entrepreneurs, and find a solid community of digital nomads. There’s so much to do here, from hobbies to hiking and, of course, trying the local food. The balance is great—you can have a productive workday and then enjoy a fun evening or weekend with the people you meet here. It’s a great mix of work and play.”

How do you stay productive while traveling and working remotely?
“I stick to a 9-to-5 routine as much as possible, adjusting for time zones when needed. But the biggest help has been working from coworking spaces like FUTRWORKS. When you’re in a space with other people working, it’s super motivating. You see others focused on their tasks, and it pushes you to do the same. Being in an office environment puts me in the mindset to work. It’s not only productive but also enjoyable—especially here in Osaka.”

How has FUTRWORKS helped with networking and meeting people?
“My professional experience at FUTRWORKS has been amazing. I’ve met so many people from around the world, each doing different kinds of work. One of the most unique people I met here was an ‘analog nomad’—someone doing things the old-school way, without relying on technology. Everyone I’ve met has been so inspiring, and they’ve given me great advice. It’s the kind of place that makes you want to create something amazing for yourself. And the staff at FUTRWORKS? They’ve been incredible. Chika and the team helped me navigate Osaka when I first arrived. They gave me tips on the language, cultural dos and don’ts, and even some secret local spots. They made my landing here so much smoother.”

What’s it like spending more time in Japan as a nomad?
“Spending more time here has been wonderful. I’ve learned some Japanese—not the whole language, but enough to open many doors. You find locals-only places, hidden gems, and better restaurants. The locals here are amazing. Even if you mess up the language, they appreciate the effort and respond with kindness. It makes you feel so welcomed. I think they really value it when you take the time to engage with their culture and language.”

For Yves, Osaka isn’t just a city—it’s a community, a cultural experience, and a place where work and life seamlessly blend. FUTRWORKS has played a small but significant role in his journey, offering the structure, connections, and support he needed to thrive as a digital nomad. Yves’ story is a reminder that where you choose to work matters just as much as the work you do. For anyone considering Osaka, it might just be the perfect place to find your balance.
