For many digital nomads, Japan is a dream destination. With the new digital nomad visa, launched in spring 2024, you can now live and work in Japan for up to six months. Here’s the scoop on what you need and how to apply, so you can dive deep into Japan’s amazing culture.

Stay Duration

The digital nomad visa lets you stay in Japan for six months, with no extensions. It’s suitable for nomads wanting to experience the various regions of Japan for longer than the 3-month period a tourist Visa allows.

Who’s Eligible?

If you’re an IT pro, digital designer, remote secretary, or manage an overseas business, you could qualify. Citizens from 50 countries, including the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and many more, are eligible.

Requirements

– Annual Income: Show proof of earning over 10 million JPY (around $67,000 USD) from non-Japanese sources.
– Medical Insurance: Have a policy covering at least 10 million JPY.

How to Apply

Gather these documents:

1. Completed visa application form with a photo
2. Passport
3. (Rough) plan of your activities and stay duration in Japan
4. Proof of income
5. Proof of medical insurance
6. Documentation for accompanying family members, if any

Tourist Visa Alternative

If you’re only planning on staying a few months, consider a tourist visa instead – valid for up to three months. It lets you enjoy Japan’s culture while working remotely (as long as you don’t earn from Japanese sources), and most importantly, it’s easily issued on arrival at the airport.
